Glasses, head coverings, expression and children

Glasses: Eyes must be completely free of the frames, and the lenses must be untinted with no reflections.

Head coverings: Permitted only for religious reasons, provided the forehead, cheekbones and chin remain visible.

Expression & pose: Face and upper shoulders shown straight-on, mouth closed, eyes fully visible, gaze directed at the camera.

How to take and crop the photo

Crop a photo to the official Denmark spec and check the head height as you go — free, and entirely in your browser.

  1. Take or choose a photo shot straight on, from about arm's length or further, in even light with no shadow falling on the face or the wall behind it. Phone selfies taken close up distort the face and are a common rejection reason.
  2. Stand far enough from the wall that you cast no shadow on it. The background needs to be light and uniform, without shadows or patterns — for example light blue or light grey; a background in sharp contrast is required for people with white or light-coloured hair, or a light-coloured headscarf — the tool fills only the area outside your photo's edges, it does not replace the wall behind you.
  3. Drop the photo into the tool above. Nothing is uploaded; the file is read directly by your browser.
  4. Drag the blue marker to the very top of the head, including hair, and the red marker to the bottom of the chin. This is the measurement every official spec is written against.
  5. Check the head-height readout. It should sit between 30 mm and 36 mm; the panel turns green when it does.
  6. Download the photo, or generate a print sheet if you need physical copies.
Why Denmark photos get rejected

Drawn from the official guidance rather than guesswork. Most rejections are not about dimensions at all:

  • Background not light and uniform, or lacking contrast against light hair or a light headscarf
  • Tinted glasses or lens reflections
  • Head covering hiding the forehead, cheekbones or chin
  • Open mouth, or gaze not directed at the camera
  • More than one person in the frame
Background colour and other notes

A Danish Passport Photo is 35 × 45 mm. The head must measure 30–36 mm from the crown of the head to the bottom of the chin. The background must be light and uniform, without shadows or patterns — for example light blue or light grey; a background in sharp contrast is required for people with white or light-coloured hair, or a light-coloured headscarf.

The Danish National Police publish their photo rules as the poster 'Krav til pasfoto', a PDF rather than page text; the same document is mirrored on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' um.dk domain for citizens applying abroad. Neither version states a recency limit or gives any digital pixel, DPI or file-size figure — Denmark's process centres on quality photographic paper or a Borgerservice photo terminal, and no separate published spec for a digital upload could be found.
